Trailer for: Resident Evil - Retribution.
The Resident Evil franchise is a collections of films that either you love them or hate them. I personally love them even though I can safely admit that at their core they are bad films. However, as a guilty pleasure that’s not so guilty and as pure mindless action they are perfect. Say what want, but you can’t deny that this trailer looks pretty badass.

The Resident Evil films continue being a surprising successful franchise, each film makes more money than the previous one. I’m a huge RE fan, I’ve played the video games, own all the films and know a lot about the plot and characters of that universe. In RE: Afterlife, Alice (Milla Jovovich) goes to the apparent virus-free town in Alaska to find it utterly deserted, except for Claire Redfield (Ali Larter). Together they travel back down to Los Angeles where they meet up with new people and most importantly, they find Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller). In here they unite and face off against Wesker, who is the ultimate villain in the RE universe.

The first thing about this last installment that really impressed me was how big the budget of the film was. It looks fantastic and the special effects are very well done. If you were one of those people (and I’m include) who saw the trailer and thought the 3D looked gimmicky, will be surprised of the fact that it’s actually not gimmicky. It’s no Avatar of course, but the 3D does make the action sequences look and feel unnaturally bad-ass. All the action sequences are the film’s high point, from the opening fight against the umbrella corporation to a fight against a huge wave of zombies in the roof. One of the film’s best moment is of course is the final fight against Wesker, who is the definition of a bad-ass villain. He fights as if he were in The Matrix and constantly cheats death. Fighting for the most bad-ass character in the film is Chris Redfield and all-time awesome Alice. I love Milla Jovovich, she is a pretty flat actress but when you give her a gun and a sword, she becomes the ultimate most bad-ass fighter. She’ll kill a million zombies and defeat an armed army without breaking a sweat. She’s one of the reasons why these films work so well. I was also very happy when Chris Redfield appeared on-screen, I’ll admit I had an internal nerdorgasm. Wentworth Miller does justice to the character and has some really cool gun fights. It was a bit of a let down that Ali Larter didn’t have so many cool moments like she did in the previous film, but I’ll forgive that.
Besides the action and complete bad-assness of the film, everything is pretty much what you would expect. The dialogue is pretty cliche and predictable, the plot is unoriginal, and so on. But if you’re a fan of the RE films or not, you overlooked those things. They are minor issues that don’t matter that much, because the rest of the film is so fun and enjoyable. My only real issue with the film is that they overuse the slow motion technique in the action scenes, which at times feels a bit annoying but not enough to ruin the experience. Resident Evil: Afterlife is by far the best film of the series and it is also by far the most bad-ass film I’ve seen this year. Almost every shot is a money shot and they surprisingly work very well. It is a fun film experience whose 3D aspect elevates it’s utter coolness. And don’t be surprised if this isn’t the last time you’ll go to the movie theater to watch a RE film.
