Gyorgy LigetiRequiem For Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Two Mixed Choirs & Orchestra (via 2001: A Space Odyssey: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

“One dimension of my music bears the imprint of a long time spent in the shadow of death both as an individual and as a member of a group (i.e. Hungarian Jews during WWII). Not that it lends a tragic quality to my music, quite the opposite.

Anyone who has been through horrifying experiences is not likely to create terrifying works of art in all seriousness. He is more likely to alienate.”

-Ligeti, quoted in Ligeti in Conversation (1984).

You should’ve seen me when this came up, I was waaaaaaay too excited clapping and cheering. I love how much Community loves Stanley Kubrick and hopefully we’ll get more references in the coming episodes.

2001: A Space Odyssey is my favorite Kubrick film, it is the most unique film I’ve ever seen. It is truly like nothing else and the last 30 minutes is such a huge mind-fuck, or mind-rape as a friend of mine pointed out. Because what happens at the is so wtf and creepy, that no matter how many times I see it still freaks the hell out. Also this film was the one who I think started the trend of artificial intelligence taking over humans and back-stabbing them basically. Stanley Kubrick was ahead of everyone, incredible imagination.
