Listening to the Messages by Alexandre Desplat.
I don’t know about you, but 2011 wasn’t a year for tears in films. I think I teared up in only two films (50/50 & Perfect Sense). But then I saw Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and the scene that brought me to my knees is when this song is playing. The song by itself already evokes sadness, sorrow and pain but placed with the performances and the fact that you’re listening to Tom Hanks’ character trapped in the Twin Towers trying reaching out to his love ones to no response devastated me unlike any other film could since 2010’s Rabbit Hole.
I feel that Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close has been under a lot of scrutiny and while I can’t deny that I’ve added to that, the film is really remarkable. It appropriates a subject matter that already possess a lot of mournful connotations, but the film expresses them in a very sincere and humanistic way that I honestly can’t see people not be affected by them. Everyone should give this film a chance. It may not be the most desirable Best Picture nominee, but neither are War Horse and The Help. Why aren’t those films under equal scrutiny?
